Tell Me Baby

Lyrics

Oh now baby You treat me like you don't know my name I want you to look at me Oh now rider by my side Take your time we got all night Baby why do you mistreat me? You talk to me like I'm some strange old man I want you to lie to me baby Oh now rider by my side Take your time we got all night I want you to tell me baby But I don't want to know No I don't need no telling mama Don't tell me about your other man I want you to leave me now Oh now rider by my side Take your time we got all night I want you to tell me baby But I don't want to know I want you to leave me now But I don't want you to go

Notes

This was a hard song to play and sing and still is. The groove is elusive and the vocal parts are demanding. When I was in Jefferson, GA with Will Manning making the album, we ran out of time before we could get a good take of this song. So I ended up recording it at our space in Brooklyn when I got home from Georgia, with Andrew Dunn engineering. We did record it to tape from what I remember (as Will and I did with the rest of the songs on that album), but it was a less fancy tape machine.

The electric version with Kris Kuss on drums was also hard to track. We tracked the whole EP live in the studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with Mike Kutchman engineering, recording guitars, vocals, and drums all at the same time. On this song though, we may have done a tiny bit of studio magic to smooth over some rough parts. This is a song I still play live often, mostly because it forces me to stay in decent shape vocally.
