Lonely Woman
Lyrics
Oh lonely woman Got no telephone Oh lonely woman I'll take you home She's got no children Barren as a stone She's always drinking She don't drink alone She's always drinking Drink me dry as a bone She don't sleep soundly She cry and moan
Notes
When you are out at bars all the time drinking with people, you meet all types. This song is about a type of woman I often encountered in the wee hours in bars of Brooklyn. I never had much of a tolerance for alcohol, so it amazed me when I would meet people who could drink seemingly endlessly without getting sick. Obviously, these people had trained, with many late nights at the bar under their belt. Some of these people were so plainly running from something serious that it was unsettling to me. Some past trauma is keeping these people in a perpetual state of drunkenness and for some of these women I wanted to take them home to offer them some true tenderness and compassion (and not sexual intimacy). I knew I could not fix them or rescue them, but I sometimes tried to offer them an alternative to self-obliteration. This was my tribute to one or two particular people I remember in those days (2011-2012).
The roar at the end of the song was not something I thought I could do or have done since on a recording. The song is a rare one played in open D tuning. Another one rarely played live.
