Sing With Me
Lyrics
My love left me on a sunny day I prayed for rain to wash my blues away Wash these blues away It rained for 90 days and nights If you see my baby, tell her I'm doing all right Babe I'm doing fine I drank myself to sleep And every night you haunted my dreams Oh my baby won't you have a drink with me I started to singing, picking my guitar If you see my good gal, please give her my regards Give her my regards I sang myself to sleep Every night for 42 weeks Sing my baby Oh won't you sing with me? I couldn't help but to start to shuffle my feet And to this day I don't know what came over me But babe, it set me free I sang myself to sleep And left behind all my misery Sing my baby Oh won't you sing with me?
Notes
Learning to sing was transformative for me. Of course I sang in music class and in chorus when I was a kid, but I was never trained formally on how to find my voice. I sang in bands as far back as high school, but my main focus was really playing guitar, and singing well was more of an afterthought. My singing was passable, but not really adventurous or controlled.
Eventually, around 2009, I realized that I needed to learn to sing if I really wanted people to hear what I had to say, and so I spent years teaching myself how to really use my voice properly. It was revelatory to have finally found my voice, and it turned me into a different person. It helped me through the heartache, and the heartache helped me really learn how to sing my feelings.
I’ve since had many struggles with my singing voice, but it feels like it’s back for the moment and I will never take that for granted.
If you don’t consider yourself a singer, I urge you to reconsider. Singing is an innately human practice, and it’s good for you to do, either alone or with people.
