I Was Wrong

Single, 2026

Lyrics

I was wrong
To push you away
Come back my love

How will I never touch you again?
Hold me my love

How will I ever learn
To protect my heart?

How will I ever trust you again?
Open up my love

I let you in my heart
And you poisoned every part

How will I ever learn?

Notes

I started writing this song on my old acoustic guitar when I first moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn after going through a breakup in Oct 2016. I remember playing arpeggios of chords that didn’t make sense to me theoretically, but sounded exactly how I was feeling, and so I just let the progression go. I remember Steve Hartlett from Ovlov and Stove was crashing on the couch in the living room outside my bedroom door, and he remarked the next morning that he could hear me working on something that sounded good to him.

It’s definitely one of the most ambitious and complex songs I have yet written. It took me about three years to really finish, and then another seven years to record! I had to get it out though, it represents a kind of turning point for me as an artist and a person and I knew I would not be able to proceed with some of the other music I’d written until this one was complete.

The song is about having made mistakes, both in trusting people, and in pushing them away. My heart is battered either way, and so I am left with nothing to do but sing about it to feel better.

Lauren Ceike is an incredible artist and photographer and she spent a long time and many late nights making the cover by hand in a Palestinian style of embroidery called tatreez. She hasn’t updated it in a while, but her website can be found at laurenceike.com.
